The Birth Of An Event

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The MGA was created in San Francisco in 2006, with the inaugural Bastards taking place over four rounds; one per weekend throughout the month of April. Two of these rounds were at the far-too-fancy TPC Harding Park, while the other two were at the much more mediocre Sharp Park in Pacifica.

Four medios took part, including of course El Presidente Jon “Lucky Kick” Morley and “Straight” Willie Dills. Morley captured the inaugural title and the coveted Blue Trucker Cap, but the real winners were the scores of Mediocre Golfers around the world, who had no idea what the fuck was about to hit them.

In 2009, the MGA expanded from one chapter to four. One of the new chapters was in Canada (Quebec), making it immediately apparent to Morley and Dills that they would now be able to crown a World Champion. So they called up Las Vegas and said, “Hey. One World Championship please”. After that, it was just a matter of ordering a tuxedo T-shirt and a chauffeur’s cap for Billdozer (who drove 750+ miles in a 15-passenger van that weekend, shuttling drunk medios to and from the strip) and a Championship Belt (much more novel back then when we came up with it BTW).

Since the first WC, the event has continued to grow and evolve every year. We went from a single round event to a full blown two-round tournament. We outgrew 18 holes and found a course with 27. That worked for a couple years and then we had to find a place with 36 holes. It wasn’t long before we sold that place out, just 5 hours after opening registration, prompting an angry mob to form outside El Presidente’s door.

He scrambled to find another 18 holes and created the Born Hairy Tour Championship, for the medios who play for the love of the game and formerly could only dream about earning their way into the World Championship field. Now, each year the top 16 from the Born Hairy earn qualified status for the following season’s WC.

And now in 2024, we are witnessing the next major evolution of the MGAWC. The event has moved from its traditional Friday/Saturday slot and is now a Monday/Tuesday tournament. The move to weekdays has enabled the MGA to keep prices stable, as everything around us continues to inflate unabated.

The move also impacted the two practice rounds previously offered in the days leading up to the WC. Since those would now require weekend hotel and golf prices (undoing any and all affordability savings) we decided instead to offer only one practice round (on Sunday) and add a new event on the back end for the medios who just can’t get enough golf!

That new event is the Take Two Challenge “A desperate scramble for glory”.

Failed at your attempt to win The Belt? Don’t worry, you’ve got another shot at a title on Wednesday Nov 13, should you choose to accept it.

The Take Two Challenge is a fun format that is totally new to the World Championship event, where medios will be able to pick a partner from any chapter and compete in a two-medio scramble. It’s open to anyone who plays in the WC or the Born Hairy.

We found a USGA handicap formula for this type of event, so handicaps will be used. However since it is a scramble, breaking 80 will not DQ your team.

We are VERY excited about this latest evolution (we think we’re approaching the swamp creature phase) and can’t wait to see the fresh energy it brings to the MGAWC. We have space for 108 teams and they will be first-come, first-served. So get your partner lined up now and make sure you both purchase the Take Two option when registering for the WC, as your team will only be locked in once both players have registered.

Registration opens July 31st at 5 pm PST on MGAWC.com.
